My friend recently reformatted her hard drive, and did a clean reinstall of windows 95. Whenever she tries to start aol to get her internet connection setup again, it tells her it was unable to find her modem. I looked around the control panel, and tried to install the modem again, and even downloaded drivers for her, but nothing seems to work. No matter what I do, I cannot get a modem to work on this computer. The computer is Packard Bell, and the chipset in it is aztech AT6800w. I have told her to just buy a new computer, I do think it time since she is still running 95, but she does not want to. Coild someone please tell me what else to do?
Thanks

When you went into the Control panel was the modem showing up in there? This seems to be an older computer, is this modem a PCI or ISA? A PCI is a white connector and ISA is black. Anyways I don't remember Windows 95 very well, but there might be an internet connection wizard on the destop or in the control panel. Also go into the control panel and click on Internet Properties and then go into the Connection tab. There is a Setup button the will start a connection wizard. First of all before doing any kind of wizard though is actually making sure the modem is showing in the control panel/system/device manager. If there is a yellow or red circle there, there is a problem. If the device is showing in the control panel, click on the device and go ot the general tab. There should be a window displaying Device Status. If there is no modem there, thats a problem. The device manager will help determine whether its a software or hardware problem.
If there is no modem there, I would suggest a couple of things just to make sure. The easiest one is to make sure the modem is seated well in the slot, but if she never went inside the computer, I don't see how that could be the problem. Also before buying a whole new computer, modems are super cheap, buy a new modem if nothing else works. I even have one I don't use just laying on the desk.
Oh before doing all of this, make sure its not an AOL problem. I haven't had AOL in a long time, but I do recall having problems like that. I also had like AOL 4.0 and then went to Prodigy. Are they on 7.0 now?! Make sure AOL is set up for the right modem and whatever settings they have in there.
Does Add Hardware Wizard work in the control panel? That is if the modem is not showing in the device manager.
Hopefully some of this helps and hopefully I didn't go on and on too much.

Dont ask me to explain this...Windows can be wierd sometimes, but I have had similar problems. Even though the device is listed in device manager and "Says" it is working properly, it isn't.
Try deleting it from device manager and then when Windows auto finds the "new" hardware, re-install it.
Good Luck

check to see which comm port your modem is on. I am having a similar problem and I am trying to install AOL on to a new computer. My modem is on comm port 3 and AOL's software is apparently designed to install correctly only if the modem is on comm port 1 or 2. Good luck to you. I am going to have my modem moved and if that doesn't solve my problem then AOL is losing a customer.
